One of the great debates of our daily communications specialists. Public relations and Journalists are a humungous platform for citizens everywhere from large and major cities to small towns in the middle of nowhere. Yes both groups are to inform people on what's going on with the news of the world or basically whatever you're interested in to be exact. The question is what is the difference between the two and are they Enemies or Allies?
A journalists job is to gather information and educate the public. The news that is produced isn't meant to sway the public opinion in any way. This is why journalists write for a mass audience and publish their work through only one medium depending on where they work.
Public Relations on the other hand is a completely different type of informative resource for the public. A PR practitioner’s responsibility is to not only inform the public, but also change the public’s attitudes and behaviors to benefit a certain organization or cause. Since PR practitioners have a more precise message to relay, their audience is carefully selected and segmented for optimal public reaction. They have more mediums than journalists to communicate their messages, including newspapers, magazines, radio, television and social media.
I honestly think that in this case, Public Relations would be the enemy against Journalism. I've resolved this conclusion because Public Relations does everything that Journalism will not do as far as who gets to see the news and where the news has been broadcasted to. Yes they're different "animals" when it comes to a comparison but one has to be bad and one has to be good. And Journalism is in fact the ally in this circumstance.
